20150411 - Rs 3rd Birthday

The day started out as a fun and special family day for R.  R woke up to a bunch of presents for his birthday that CF had bought him (R really liked a tabletop billiards table.)  CF, R, and I went for breakfast at White Spot while A was in Chinese School.  The plan was that we would go play mini golf,  then bowling,  then go to Chuck E Cheeses.  But before we made it to mini golf,  we got a call from the Tungs.  So we thought it would be a good idea to have them with us to celebrate Rs birthday since he plays with them pretty often.

R had a great time playing mini golf and had a big smile on his face as he sped through the holes.  Afterwards,  we went to the practice putting green for a few minutes as well.  I think R had a great time golfing with CF, Alex, Lex and I.  Who knows - maybe he'll be great at it someday but I can only stand golfing for so long due to my allergies.  Afterwards, we went to Toys R Us to waste some time before meeting with A at the bowling alley  (her grandparents were dropping her off there).
At the Zone Bowling Alley, we also met up with the Tungs again including Lynn and Jasmine.  We first had lunch at the pho restaurant at the alley and then the kids played some 10 pin bowling.

At first, all seemed fine.  But after a few minutes,   Rs suddenly starting crying hysterically just as CF and A went to the bathroom.  I didn't know what had happened since he had been fine standing right underneath me and then the next thing I knew, he was crying.  He was clenching his left wrist and did not want to move it.

Well I was in a panic and we left right away and we rushed to the hospital at Royal Columbian.  I comforted R as best as I could by letting him watch TV on my phone.  He was let in fairly quickly considering his young age.  We were thinking that he could have broken his wrist,  dislocated it, or sprained it while playing bowling. He saw the triage nurse, then was put in the pediatric room where they gave him some Tylenol, then had his weight taken, then finally saw a doctor.  The doctor thought it might be another nurse maid's elbow but wanted to get x-rays done before manipulating his elbow/wrist.   So we waited another few minutes to get x-rays done.  During this time R fell asleep  (it was about 4pm by this time which was about 1-2 hours past his normal nap time. )  This kind of worked for the best since the doctor ordered about a dozen x-rays that would have been pretty bad for a screaming toddler.  I went with R to take the x-rays while CF was taking care of A in the waiting area.

When we were done, (I had been carrying R ever since we got to the hospital and was still carrying him,) we went back to the pediatric room to wait for the results of the x-rays.  The doctor said that everything looked ok so they were going to try the fix for the nurse maid's elbow.  She and a senior doctor proceeded to manipulate Rs elbow and afterwards he seemed to have strength back in his left arm.  The doctors did not notice a "click" in his elbow so we suspect that whatever was wrong with his elbow / wrist may have been fixed when his arm was being manouvered for all the x-rays.  Things could have been worse if A was going to be trouble but she understood the seriousness of what was going on and she knew that we were worried about R.  A did manage to help out.

We left the hospital and went to the grandparents house which was close by to the hospital in case we had to rush back.  R slept for about 1.5 hours before he woke up around 6pm.  He cried for a bit but didn't seem to be in pain.  He may have just been cranky.  After watching more tv and spending more time with his family, he settled down and everything seemed to be back to normal.  We sent a couple of messages to the Tungs to let them know what was happening and to inform them that we probably would not go to Chuck E Cheeses as originally planned.   We just ate some food at CFs mom's house and had some Dairy Queen cake that we picked up down the street to celebrate Rs birthday.   R enjoyed blowing out his candles.  He really did not eat much of his cake but he was happy. In the end, this was definitely not the birthday we planned but it will probably stick in our minds for a while.  And I don't think that we will go 10 pin bowling for a while.
